Biking on Mount Dessert Island
For comprehensive and descriptive listings of MDI's best road rides, carriage road rides, and combination rides, pick up this handy pocket guide by Audrey Minutolo.

Where can I park?
We recommend that you leave your car at the hotel or campground and walk or take the free Island Explorer Shuttle. Parking on Cottage Street is 2 hour only (and they do ticket). All day street parking is available on West Street, one block toward the water parallel to Cottage Street.

Can I take the Island Explorer?
It’s free; it’s a great way to get here so you won’t have to worry about parking. Bikes are allowed; however in the busy season the space is limited (4 per bus?).
To our knowledge it runs a timely schedule. However we are only 1.5 miles from the Carriage Roads, you may want to ride from here.

Where can I go to the bathroom?
Here. On the trails there are bathrooms at Bubble Pond, Jordan Pond House, Eagle Lake Parking Lot, Visitors Center, Park Headquarters, Seur d’ Monts Springs and most parking lots.

What about food?
The only place on the Carraige Roads to get food is Jordan Pond House, the restaurant often has a wait in busy times, but there is a gift shop with snacks. You can get bars and drinks (our water will fit in water bottles cages on most bikes) here, or go to The Bagel Factory or Hannaford Supermarket and rent a rack pack.

Where should I eat dinner?
Café This Way, Havana, Donohue’s, Poor Boys, 151, George’s , EPI,  Burning Tree etc…

What else is there to do?
KIDS: Diver ED, Oceanarium, Park sponsored walks and campfires, YMCA activities and local playgrounds
Adults: Kayak Tours, we like National Park Kayak 288-0342

How long will this route take?
We try not to quote times, and you may enjoy the trail so much that you take your time. We don’t require you to have the bike back at a certain time, that’s why we wait to charge you when you come back. However most groups can make it to JPH and back in a four hour time.

Are There Hills?
Yes! But we can help you with a route that will minimize the hills and show you where not to go (or where to go if you want something more challenging)

What are the Carriage trails?
Over 50 miles of dirt road through the interior of the park closed to motor traffic. The trails go around lakes or mountains; it’s the best way to see the interior of the park. None of the trails are actually on the ocean.

What about Road Bikes?
The Park Loop Road is a 19.2 mile, mostly one way, well paved road that offers some of the best views and road biking anywhere.
We have a local Bike Club that does several rides through-out the week, ask at the shop what rides are going during your visit. (usually Saturday and Sunday am and Tuesday and Thursday pm.).

What about Mountain Biking?
There are no single track trails on MDI, most of the land is protected by park and bikes are not allowed on trails (there is also a small part of carriage trail still owned by the family that donated the trails to the park where bikes are not allowed.) However some carriage trails are more challenging than others, We would be happy to show you. (Also, off island there are trails, Joe or Al could help here, but bring a Delorme Maine Gazeteer.)

What if I crash the bike (or it gets damaged or stolen)?
While the bike is in your care it is your responsibility. Because of this, if you are concerned please be sure the bike works well for YOU before you leave.

What is Trailside service?
If you get a flat or have any other mechanical problem we will do everything we can to help, first contact us and tell us where you are. Most likely we will ask you to head to the nearest trail head and meet you there. There also Park Rangers on Bikes and a volunteer Bike Patrol that may be able to assist you.

Do I have to pay the Park Entrance Fee?
Any time you are in the Park you need to have a pass. They are available by the Explorer stop at the Village Green and at the gate before Sand Beach.
